Many of the Harrell family members are buried at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in LaCrosse, Florida. In 1876 and early 1877, a group, including Joseph and his sons, built New Hope across from the Santa Fe River. James Madison Harrell died from heat stroke while working on the roof of this building.
